A Creative Change At the Helm of Chloe

And it begins again, the fashion industry’s game of musical chairs. Last year saw a remarkable number of changes with Hedi Slimane leaving Saint Laurent, Anthony Vacarello then leaving Versus Versace to fill his shoes, amongst other upsets. It’s still hard to forget Alber Elbaz’ brutal departure from Lanvin…

This year’s first shuffle is at the house of Chloe, Richmont’s must lucrative fashion brand, with a turnover of approximately Euro 400 million annually. The creative director at Chloe, Clare Waight-Keller will not be renewing her contract at Chloe, siting family issues. The role of Chloe creative director seems to be destined for Natacha Ramsay-Levi, the right hand person to Nicolas Ghesquiere at Louis Vuitton.

People in the business believe that this move will leave a large void at LV, with Ramsay-Levi being the go-to person on most things. It is well known that Nicolas Ghesquiere’s leadership is more strategic..That said, some people are questioning the appropriateness of this new hire. Natasha Ramsay-Levi and Louis Vuitton’s style in general is quite different to that at Chloe. The latter is known for free-flowing, bohemian silhouettes and fabrics, where as the LV direction has always been stiffer and bolder.

A change in direction may not be a bad thing though, case in point Balenciaga after the appointment of Vetement’s Demna Gvasalia. The unlikely fit resulted in some of the most impressive creative work of 2016… We shall wait and see!
