Maria Grazia Chiuri needs to work on her designs fast, but also feels it important to have time.

The fashionista and her business partner Pierpaolo Piccioli are the creative directors of Italian brand Valentino and have been praised for their vision.

On Monday evening (07Dec15) the duo were honored with the Women’s Leadership Award at the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund Gala, where they discussed their opinions on designers churning out collections.

"We work fast," Maria told The Cut. "We need to go fast, but honestly, we believe that it is important, also, to have the time. Because if you want to do something consistent, something beautiful, it’s important. In our company we are really lucky because we are a couture company, and to have something couture, you need time, you need human touch."

Pierpaolo agreed with his colleague, pointing out that while they feel pressure to do the label justice, they never forget how lucky they are. Discussing whether the pace could change in the future, Maria noted it's down to the company. Proenza Schouler recently banned press from taking images of their pre-spring collection, which Pierpaolo respects but doesn't quite agree with.

"I really love (designer) Jack (McCollough) and Lazaro (Hernandez)," he explained. "I think that they are doing a very good job. In a way, I think fashion is meant to be communicated, so when you close communication, you lack something. That’s what I feel."
